My Cousin Peter

My cousin Peter is always one of the happiest people you would ever want to meet. He is always wearing a smile and isn't concerned with such things and what outfit to wear or what new toys or gadgets to purchase. He lives on his own in a group home and often attends family gatherings.

My cousin Peter has Down Syndrome.

When we were growing up and he attended our family get-togethers he liked to have a broom and sweep. He could sweep the countertops and furniture as well as the floor and my aunt or my cousin would take the broom away from him, just in case he banged someone in the head with it.

He is a happy-go-lucky guy. When I graduated from the University of Wisconsin Journalism school and got my first job as a reporter on the local weekly newspaper it was a thrill for me to do a special story. My story in the paper was about the group home where my cousin lived. My aunt was featured in the story and Peter's photo appeared. It was a happy occasion for my family and we still have the newspaper clipping of that article from long ago.

Now when Peter attends family gatherings, he is quite fond of the yellow pages. He loves to page through it and occupies himself with that as we gather and talk all around him. I am very fortunate to have him in my life.
